I've written for magazines and newspapers around the world, but “The Vertical Expression” was my first novel. Well. actually, I've written creatively for most of my life, but this was the first time I'd taken it seriously and got down to actually working on and finishing a book!
"The Vertical Expression" is a romantic novel and a feel-good story based on competitive dancing. The title is taken from George Bernard Shaw’s observation that "Ballroom Dancing is the vertical expression of horizontal desire!” The title came to me while I was watching a dance competition!
I've had quite a few questions about how I went about writing The Vertical Expression, well, it was both so easy and so hard, so much fun and so frustrating! As a writer for newspapers, specialist magazines and business reports, I thought that turning my hand to fiction (some say most of my business reports were fiction!) would be easy, but I've literally been working on it for very many years and it's changed vastly over that time; one publisher asked for the manuscript, held it for a year then said no! After the professionally challenging years writing for newspapers and magazines, I moved into another career path and became a manager - that really set my writing ambitions back - no time left and no energy!
I've been asked what motivated me to write stories about dancers and dancing, about real competitive dancers - well, I've become so fed up with all the jokes about competitive dancers, endless comments about 'sewing on all my own sequins', the assumptions that all competitive dancing is like the TV shows, so I wanted a story that did dancers and dancing justice!
I've had so many kind and supportive messages about my books, it's made the years of work worthwhile! I've loved creative writing since I was a child, but the stories I came up with, to me, seemed rubbish. When I wrote for newspapers, I thought that was creative writing, but I never found it satisfying - I always had to agonize over the number of words and even then generally found that my stories were cut! I of course had to do what the editor wanted even if I felt the story was damaged as a result, and how many times did I find that he then didn't use the story! But writing my own books, using my imagination, telling the story as I feel it should be told is literally liberating!
Hope you enjoy my journey with me!

My stories are set in and around the world of Ballroom dancing, but there's far more to them than just descriptions of dresses and dance competitions! They're adventures, love stories, full of fun and, most importantly, drama!
